Dry Matter Intake Formula

Dry Matter Intake = Animal Weight × Dry Matter Intake Percentage

As-Fed Intake = Dry Matter Intake ÷ Feed Dry Matter Percentage

The dry matter and feed dry matter percentages must be converted to decimal values when performing the calculation.

For example, 2.5% becomes 0.025 and 85% becomes 0.85.

Example Dry Matter Intake Calculation

Suppose a producer has cattle averaging 1,200 pounds and estimates dry matter intake at 2.5% of body weight.

Dry matter intake per animal:

1,200 × 0.025 = 30 pounds per day

If the feed is 85% dry matter:

30 ÷ 0.85 = 35.29 pounds as-fed per day

For a herd of 50 animals:

30 × 50 = 1,500 pounds of dry matter per day

35.29 × 50 = approximately 1,764.71 pounds of as-fed feed per day

This calculation helps producers estimate actual feed requirements while accounting for moisture in the feed.

Why Dry Matter and As-Fed Intake Are Different

Feed weight includes both dry matter and water.

Dry feeds generally contain a higher percentage of dry matter, while wetter feeds may contain significantly more moisture.

Two feeds with the same as-fed weight may provide different amounts of actual dry matter.
